Insulin Resistance: The Problem You Can Have Even When Your Labs Look “Normal”

By Brian Delatte February 04, 2026 0 comments

You’re not crazy—and you’re not broken.

If your energy crashes after meals, cravings feel intense, and your belly weight won’t move… but you keep hearing, “Your labs look normal,” insulin resistance may be the missing explanation.

A core idea about insulin resistance is this: blood sugar can look normal while insulin is rising behind the scenes. That means you can feel the effects long before A1C finally changes.

What insulin resistance actually means (simple version)

Insulin is the hormone that helps move sugar (glucose) from your bloodstream into your cells.

With insulin resistance, your cells don’t respond well… so your body makes more insulin to keep blood sugar controlled.

That “high insulin / normal sugar” phase can last for years—often while people feel:

  • stuck

  • frustrated

  • tired

  • hungry

  • confused

Why A1C can miss early warning signs

A1C is useful, but it’s a lagging indicator. It shows average blood sugar—not how hard your body is working to keep it normal.

So the better question becomes:
“Is my body having to work overtime to keep my numbers normal?”

Quiet clues many people overlook

You don’t need every sign—patterns matter.

  • Stubborn belly weight

  • Energy crashes after eating

  • Carb cravings that feel “out of control”

  • Brain fog / trouble focusing

  • Skin tags or dark patches of skin

The good news

If this is what’s going on, it’s not a character flaw.

It’s a metabolic signal—and signals can be responded to.

In Part 2 tomorrow, I’ll share the markers many people don’t check that can reveal insulin resistance earlier than A1C alone.
